Leiland Charles is creating a new work based in Columbus, OH collaborating with other creatives to create his project including videographer Jennifer Zmuda. The piece is entitled “Perspective: A work In Progress.” It touches on the difference of opinion on the existence and effects of climate change and its effect on our personal relationships.
"Creating art is what drives me to give myself, as well as the larger world, a story they can relate to, or even just believe in." - Leiland
LEILAND CHARLES
CHOREOGRAPHER
Picture
Leiland Charles was born in Baltimore, Md.  He first stepped into a dance studio at the age of three with The Howard County Ballet in Ellicott City, Md. under the direction of Kathi Ferguson. Leiland furthered his artistic training at The Juilliard School where he received his BFA in spring 2014.  While at Juilliard, he began choreographing, creating close to 10 new varying works for Juilliard's independent dance workshops. Throughout that time, 3 of his works were chosen for Juilliard Dance's Choreographic Honors.

Upon graduation, Mr. Charles joined Alberta Ballet in Calgary, Canada, under the artistic direction of Jean Grand-Maître, where he created his first larger work entitled "Passages" as well as a solo "Whim," both for Alberta Ballet's production of "Up Close." After three seasons at Alberta Ballet, Leiland joined BalletMet under the artistic direction of Edwaard Liang in Columbus, Ohio. Throughout his time at BalletMet, Leiland has created "I Just Want To Make Love To You" for BalletMet2's Harlem Renaissance program as well as "Figurines" for BalletMet's main company and BalletMet2 in the production of "Unlocked." Leiland looks forward to continuing his choreographic endeavors in the future with BalletMet and beyond.
