Nature Inspired by Kara

Kara Komarnitsky
"My goal when crafting anything is always to extend the lifetime and use of the materials, to repurpose instead of discard, and to turn objects deemed “waste” into something beautiful."
Donation Campaign
Kara Komarnitsky is a dancer and choreographer from Salt Lake City, Utah now a junior majoring in Dance at Ohio State University with minors in Environmental Science and Business. At OSU she has performed works by faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students as well as choreographing her own works over the past three years. Kara is the President of the Sierra Club Student Coalition at OSU and her current work is focusing on the intersection of dance performance and environmental advocacy.
"Solving the climate crisis is not just about the products we make, it’s about the process of making them and the way we live while getting there. Artists and makers have always been resilient, open, and creative, all skills that we will need to reimagine the way we live into a sustainable process for the environment and for our humanity.”

"The ethos behind these jewelry pieces is one of reuse and openness. They were made out of a willingness to reimagine the future of these materials and on a small scale also reimagine our collective future in a way that embraces imperfection. This state of mind that prioritizes reuse instead of newness, detail instead of standardization, and function instead of convenience, allows us to build sustainable habits that will move us toward a better future for ourselves and the planet."

About The Materials

  • What makes them climate oriented is their connection to place and the reuse of objects and materials rather than new production
  • Materials I use are found objects, leather cords, and sterling silver depending on the specific piece of jewelry.
  • Each of the pieces are one of a kind and handmade. They won’t last forever, but Kara hope's that they can help remind us of the ongoing cycles of nature that created each element and that when they do eventually break, that they will find yet another purpose.

*Note! This is a limited collection and there are only one of each piece. Each piece is given our at first come first serve along with the donation.
Kara has gifted her creations to Artists Climate Collective to amplify our first campaign. This donation campaign will help us raise funds for our upcoming film project. To receive a piece of jewelry, we are asking that you donate a contribution to our campaign.
