Blue walks is a series of action paintings inspired by nature and the oceanic tides that unite us as creatures of the earth. Extremely simple in monotone color palette and minimalist design, these works were created with prints made by dancing along the page in pointe shoes, combining two of my most practiced disciplines. |
Gabriel Gaffney Smith (American Artist, b.1985) is a modern-day renaissance man with an artistic resumé spanning multiple mediums. Raised in beautiful upstate New York, Smith began dancing at Saugerties Ballet Center at the age of 12. After completing his training at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater school, he was asked to join the company in 2005. Gabriel then joined BalletMet in 2008 where he continued his career under the directorship of Gerard Charles and Edwaard Liang.
As an accomplished fine artist, Smith’s intricate wood carvings have been showcased in museums, private collections, and galleries across the country. His award-winning choreography has graced the stages throughout the dance world alongside his musical compositions. |
Maggie Carey (she/her) was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio and moved to San Francisco in 2018 to join Smuin Contemporary Ballet as a Company Artist. Alongside being a professional dancer, she has a great hunger for creativity and loves to discover new ways to express herself through art. Some of her favorite mediums include watercolor painting, weaving wall looms, and shooting film photography. She is a Leo, her favorite color is yellow, and she is very excited and honored to create artwork for the Artist's Climate Collective.
Her work for this commission is painted florals on recycled wood planks. Each flower painted is native to the Bay Area and is also currently endangered due to climate change. |
