Atlanta Project

Dear Roots; An Interview.

"I was initially inspired to create from a place of appreciation of one of nature’s mysteries: the mycelium network. I wanted to use the idea of people personifying mushrooms that show us “a day in the life” of an “employee” in the communication network that lives below us." - Kane
CHOREOGRAPHY
Darian Kane
Picture
Darian is currently dancing her fourth season with the Atlanta Ballet, and has also previously time dancing with Ballet Met. Her choreographic career began this past performance season in a dancer turned choreographer project where she discovered a new creative outlet. She plans to continue to develop her choreographic voice and stylistic pursuit in tandem with her employment as a dancer.

In addition to working with the ballet, she is an artist whose work primarily consists of dark, colorless pen and ink drawings. Her main focus for creation comes from a passion for mental health advocacy, growth, and compassion.

Music

Track 1: audio created by Alec Zais

Track 2: Wistmans Wood by Derek Fiechter

Track 3: Gymnopedie, by Qiwei Zeng (after Satie)
San Francisco Conservatory of Music -  recorded and mixed by the students of Costas Dafnis’ TAC Seminar in The Bowes Center Studio G, San Francisco, California
Musician - Sophia Bacelar, cello

Track 3 is a project from the students of Technology and Applied Composition Seminar, 2021

The 2021 Reimaginings project challenged TAC students to engage in active dialogue with the work of composers from the classical canon. In partnership with cellist Sophia Bacelar, each composer immersed themselves in a piece for several weeks before beginning workshops of their own rendering. Inspired by the pandemic's demand for works that could be performed alone or online, each piece is scored for cello and electronics and manipulates familiar material to recontextualize and expose modern poignancy within the base work. Addressing the physical and emotional needs of musicians, the performance materials are "alive" and available to program as a collection, pair against their original versions or perform as stand-alone works.
TAC Seminar is a course at SFCM focused on the interplay between technology and live performance, students discuss genre-agnostic trends in contemporary music and write for and collaborate with organizations including the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the Greek Chamber Music Project, Ballet 22, SF IndieFest and the San Francisco Art Institute.
